App State Falls to NC State and Campbell

RALEIGH, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's tennis competed twice on Saturday at J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh. In the first match of the day, Appalachian State fell to NC State, 7-0. Later in the afternoon, the Apps fell to Campbell 5-2.

During the early morning match, the Wolfpack earned the doubles point along with winning six singles matches.

NC State took the first two doubles matches as App State's No. 2 tandem of sophomore Heidi Swope and senior McKayla Zupan fell to Amanda Rebol and Anna Rogers. No. 1 doubles finished second on the day as Bianca Moldovan and Claudia Wiktorin of NC State defeated App State's pair of seniors in Gabrielle Wreder and Megan Mullen, 6-2.  

The last App State pair of junior Melissa Machado and sophomore Rebecca Morse was cut short while trailing Adriana Reami and Tayla Stenta, 4-1.

In #1 singles, Morse fell behind after the first set but was able to hang close in the second set. NC State's Reami was able to battle back in the second set and outlasted the Apps' Morse finishing the matchup 6-3, 7-5.

NC State proved to be too much for Appalachian State on Saturday as the Wolfpack defeating the Mountaineers in all six singles matches. The first singles finish of the day was NC State's Anna Rodgers defeating Wreder 6-1, 6-0.

Swope fell to Wiktorin, 6-0,6-2. In the #4 singles match, Machado dropped the match 6-1, 6-3. Taylor Bygrave fell to her counterpart Rebol, 6-2, 6-1.

The Wolfpack took the last match of the day as Marisa Anthony fell to Stenta 6-1, 7-5.

Appalachian was defeated by Campbell later in their second match of the day, 5-2.

In the No. 1 doubles match, Wreder and Mullen defeated Alexandra Andrivot 6-3 to start off the competition.

Swope and Zupan followed suit by notching the first point of the day against Pauline Roustan and Alexandra Nicoara in No. 2 doubles, 6-0.

In No. 3 doubles, Andre and Anthony matched up against Lea Cutura and Mia Covic of Campbell, but the match was unfinished.

In No. 1 singles, Morse held strong through the first set, forcing the set to extend, but eventually came up short against Andrivot and was outlasted 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

Wreder fell to Cutura, 6-3, 6-2, in No. 2 singles, while in No. 3 Swope notched out the win.

Swope who handed a loss to Alexandra Nicoara, 6-3, 6-2, recorded her first win of the new year.

Bygrave was able to take the match to a third set but also fell short in the last set, 6-7, 6-3, 7-5.

In the No. 5 spot, Anthony was defeated by Campbell's Boada, and the Camels took the last match of the day as Zupan was defeated by Covic.

The Mountaineers look to find success and notch their first victory of the spring slate on January 29 at UNC Asheville. The match is set for 3 p.m.
