Box Score Boone, N.C. – Appalachian State University field hockey slips to Georgetown 4-3 in a nail-biting match that went into overtime on Sunday afternoon at the Brandon & Erica M. Adcock Field Hockey Stadium.
“Today was a heart-breaker, but a really positive experience for our group,” said head coach Meghan Dawson. “We got better today and we were able to string more passes together. We had one of our freshman, Kaley Selner, step up today and add a goal and good defensive work. Our group will continue to work hard and get better everyday.”
The first half started off slow with both teams trying to develop their rhythm, but Georgetown (2-0) got into the groove first and provided the first strike into the goal. The Mountaineers (0-2) did not wait long to respond to the Hoyas scoring in the 29th minute from a smoldering unassisted-shot but junior Taylor Cimbalist to even out the score.
Then in a blink of an eye, Selner stormed into the circle and hurled a frightening shot past the goal line that shook the Hoyas in the final ticks of the 29th minute. Appalachian ended the 35-minute period up by one with great momentum leading into the second half.
Trailing by one, the Hoyas entered into the second half eager to shorten the Mountaineer-gap. GU's Megan Parson granted the Hoya's wish by smacking the ball into the goal to bring the score to 2-2.
Gaining new momentum, the Mountaineers responded to Georgetown's second goal with one of their own in the 60th minute. Freshman Ali Williams slammed the ball into the net off of a rebounded shot from Rebecca McLean to extend the lead to 3-2.
With 15 minutes left on the board, the Hoyas never gave up and scored another goal to end regulation at three a piece.
With the game on the line in overtime, both teams were yearning to deliver the gut-wrenching shot to end the match. Each team exerted much energy in pressuring each goalie in extra-time, but Georgetown's Sam Hickey delivered the final sting to end the bout 4-3.
Shots
The goalies on both sides of the turf were presented with many shots from each team's attackers, but Georgetown was able to outshoot App 31-13 with 16-9 shots on goal.
