SONDRIO, Italy –– Appalachian State University men's basketball played its third game of its tour of both Slovenia and Italy on Thursday night.
The Mountaineers, who are 2-1 on the trip thus far, defeated the Sondrio All-Stars 97-62 in a packed gym full of basketball fans wanting to catch a glimpse of the game.
App State got off to a quick start in the opening quarter, scoring on its first seven possessions of the game and building an early lead. After a 28-16 first quarter, the Sondrio All-Stars put together a 6-0 run to begin the second period, but Appalachian responded well - finishing the quarter and heading into halftime with a 54-31 advantage.
Leading the Mountaineers at the break were sophomores Tyrell Johnson and Ronshad Shabazz. Johnson scored 14 first-half points, while Shabazz added 13, including a tough buzzer-beating three-pointer to end the half.
The Black and Gold ended the half much like it began the game - scoring on its final seven possessions.
Appalachian's largest advantage in any quarter came in the third period when the Mountaineers outscored the Sondrio All-Stars, 28-13 to build an 82-44 lead heading into the fourth.
App State would win the game 97-62 with contributions from everyone on the roster. Johnson led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Shabazz finished with 15 points and Bennett Holley finished with 10.
Jake Wilson added 10 rebounds to lead the Mountaineers on the glass. For the game, App State shot 49.4 percent from the field, 36.7 percent from three and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe.
The Mountaineers will play their last game on Saturday against AS Monaco - one of the top teams in the top tier league in France (France Ligue 1).
