Box Score TROY, Al. — Appalachian State University baseball took a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth inning during game two of the weekend series with Troy, but was unable to keep them off the board in the bottom half of the frame, falling on a walk-off single through the left side of the infield, 4-3.
Brian Bauk had not hit a home run in his any of his 245 career at bats. That all changed in the top of the third inning when his first career homer sailed over the 30 foot wall in right field. The dinger drove in Matt Vernon and gave the Mountaineers (8-23, 3-11 Sun Belt) a 2-0 advantage.
Breydan Gorham enjoyed on his one of his finest outings today. Gorham pitched seven complete innings while only allowing one run on five hits. Gorham also struck out five batters giving him 34 on the year.
The Trojans (19-13, 5-6 Sun Belt) cut the Mountaineer lead to a run in the fourth when Joey Denison hit a lead-off triple off the wall. Denison was batted in on an error by the third baseman.
Reed Howell came into relieve Gorham at the start of the eighth inning. Howell's appearance was short after he walked the first two batters he faced on nine pitches. Bauk came into the game with two men on base and gave up a run that tied the game.
Tyler Stroup singled into the right center to start off the ninth. The Mountaineers got runners on the corners after Jason Curtis was hit by a pitch and Stroup stole third base. Grayson Atwood entered the game to pinch hit and singled to shallow right field that brought the go-ahead run across the plate.
Two singles and two stolen bases put Trojans on second and third. After a walk loaded the bases, Trevor Davis hit a ground ball that slipped through the left side of the infield bringing home the tying and winning run.
The Mountaineers will be back at Riddle-Pace Field for game three of the weekend series tomorrow. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. ET.
