WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - No. 44 Wake Forest (11-2) was too much for Appalachian State University women's tennis (3-6) Saturday afternoon, as the Demon Deacons captured a 7-0 victory.
WF claimed the doubles point winning all three matches. The No. 3 tandem of Melissa Machado and McKayla Zupan fell,6-1, to Luisa Fernandez and Andrea Retolaza before Taylor Bygrave and Megan Mullen was topped, 6-3.
At No. 1 doubles, Clare Cox and Heidi Swope suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands of Samantha Asch and Emma Davis.
In singles competition, the hosts kept the momentum taking all six singles matches. Machado fell 6-0,6-0 to Davis in a clash of No. 2's followed by Swope's 6-2, 6-1 setback to Fernandez at the three spot.
Gabrielle Wreder (Miami, Fla./Miami Killian) fell to Joanna Zalewski at the three spot in the lineup, 6-4, 6-0. In a matchup between No. 5's, Rebecca Morse fell to her counterpart, 6-3, 6-1, while Brianna Armellino (West Palm, Fla./Home School) suffered a 6-0, 7-5 decision to Kasey Gardiner.
Cox's singles match would be the last to end the day, as she played against the 82nd-ranked student-athlete in the nation, and fought valiantly. Cox fell to Kimmy Geurin, 6-3, 7-6.
The women will return to action on Monday against Bethune-Cookman 2 p.m. in Daytona, Fla.
