TROY, Ala. - Appalachian State University women's tennis (4-9) dropped a 4-2 decision to Troy (10-4) Thursday morning at the Lunsford Tennis Complex in Troy, Ala.
Clare Cox and
Heidi Swope were the two lone student-athletes to pick up points for Appalachian, as the two teammates notched singles victories.
The Trojans would take the two out of three doubles matches to capture the doubles point. The duo of
Gabrielle Wreder and
McKayla Zupan fell, 6-0, to Sanae Ohta/Nancy Karaky to give the hosts the first doubles match. The tandem of Cox/Swope fell in a hard-fought match, 6-3, to Hannah Seizer/Alicia Rodriguez.
With Troy leading 1-0 going into singles play, the Trojans kept the momentum despite Wreder falling to Ohta in a tough straight-set decision 7-6 (7-4), 6-1. Cox's 6-3,6-3 triumph over Jiayuan Xue brought Appalachian to within a point, 2-1, but Karaky downed
Rebecca Morse, 6-2, 6-3 to put the Trojans back up, 3-1.
While Swope was able to bring Appalachian to within a point once again with her win over Efriliya Herlina, 6-4, 6-0, Troy claimed the final point for the win with Luisa Ferrauti earning a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Zupan.
App State will conclude the weekend with the 10 a.m. match tomorrow against No. 47 Georgia State in Troy, Ala.
