SAN MARCOS, TEXAS — Appalachian State University baseball took a 2-0 lead into the sixth innning of game one of its weekend Sun Belt series at Texas State before the Bobcats (13-5, 4-0) plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth to claim a, 4-2, victory on Friday afternoon.

The Mountaineers (4-14, 0-4) struck first in the second inning. Matt Vernon drew a walk off starting Bobcat pitcher Lucas Humpal. Grayson Atwood then launched one of the Mountaineers three hits on the day all the way to the left field wall. Vernon made his way home all the way from third to give the Apps a 1-0 lead.

Later in the inning, Atwood advanced to third on a wild pitch. With one out, Will Herman grounded out to second base but allowed Atwood to get across the plate to make it 2-0 Appalachian.

Mountaineer starting pitcher Bobby Hampton allowed no runs and just one hit through five innings. In the sixth inning with two men on base, Granger Studdard singled into left field. Tyler Stroup had the ball bounce off his glove and roll all the way back to the fence, allowing both runs to score and Studdard to advance to third.

Stephen Schoch came in to relieve Hampton. Schoch got one out before giving up an RBI double and a single in which two more runs score. The four-run inning would close out the scoring for both teams, with each team only recording one more hit.

The Mountaineers and Bobcats will be back at Bobcat Ballpark tomorrow at 4 p.m. ET for game two of the three-game series. The Apps will throw Fr. RHP Seth Hardin.
