UL Monroe Uses Late Run to Outlast App State
Box Score BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's basketball led visiting UL Monroe by seven points, 87-80, with just over three minutes to play in the game. ULM then went on an 11-3 run to go up 91-90 with 9.7 seconds to play and Appalachian had to go the length of the court. Frank Eaves missed a jumper from above the right block before Ronshad Shabazz missed a putback dunk attempt as time ran out.

Shabazz turned in a game-high 27 points (10-for-17) to go with five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Eaves added 21, Chris Burgess had 14 and Bennett Holley tallied 13 - tying his career high from Dec. 31 at UL Monroe. The Mountaineers (6-17, 4-8 Sun Belt) were unconscious from the field shooting 57.4 percent (31-of-54), including 60.0 percent from three-point land (15-for-25).

However, the Warhawks (11-12, 7-5 Sun Belt) were led by Nick Coppola who finished with 25 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the field. Majok Deng talled 22 points and Justin Roberson finished with 21.

App State would face its biggest deficit of the game down by seven, 23-16, midway through the first half. The Apps would take a one point lead 33-32 on a Shabazz free throw, which capped a 17-9 run. The run was keyed by a Burgess three and the Mountaineers would get two more triples in the midst of the run from Holley and Shabazz. Appalachian would head into the lockerroom trailing by three on the back of a Shabazz fastbreak jam.

The second half featured 10 lead changes and five tied scores. Up 79-77, the Mountaineers would go on a 8-3 run to build a seven point lead at 87-80. With just 1:45 left in the game, App State held a 90-85 lead, however, a 6-0 run from the Warhawks including a Coppola layup with 9.7 seconds to seal ULM's victory.

Appalachian State will return to the court on Thursday, Feb. 11 at Texas State and finish its Texas road swing at UT Arlington on Saturday, Feb. 13.
