Mountaineers Blast Owls in Record-Setting Night

BOONE, N.C. –– Behind a 119-point effort, Appalachian State University men's basketball set a new Holmes Center record for points scored and also topped the all-time program record for victory margin with a 68-point win (119-51) over Warren Wilson College on Thursday night.

 

The Mountaineers (1-2) connected on a season-high 40 field goals with 27 of those coming via an assist. The 27 assists were a season-high for the Mountaineers. All 15 eligible players scored in the game. Appalachian topped the Owls (3-1) on the glass by 30 with a season-high 55 rebounds. App State scored an astounding 74 points off the bench.

 

Appalachian State boasted five double-digit scorers, which makes it three consecutive games that the Black and Gold have had four or more players scored double-digit points.

 

Patrick Good led the way with 16 points on 5-for-7 shooting from the field, including 4-for-6 from long range. This comes on the heels of a 21-point effort from Good on Tuesday on the road at Tennessee.

 

Both Tyrell Johnson and Jake Babic notched 13 points, while Emarius Logan and Ronshad Shabazz scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

 

Craig Hinton posted the best game of his Mountaineer career and finished with nine points and a team-high seven rebounds. Bennett Holley also scored nine points and Kelvin Robinson netted seven.

 

Isaac Johnson finished with eight points and four rebounds for the Mountaineers and Matt O'Boyle collected a season-high eight points and six rebounds.

 

Jake Wilson collected four points and four rebounds. Griffin Kinney notched four points and two rebounds in 15 minutes of work. Zach Cottrell topped his season-high of two points with a 3-pointer with three points and a rebound.

 

Both Trey Ford and Kevin Kerley netted their first points of the season. Ford hit a three, while Kerley connected on a free throw. The point for Kerley was the first of his career.

 

Warren Wilson opened the game with a 3-pointer, but the Mountaineers countered with a 21-4 run over the next 9:05 of the first half and never looked back. The Apps lead would balloon to 30 points with 2:05 left in the opening half when Good stole the ball and finished the play with a three.

 

Appalachian went into the locker room with a firm grip on the contest and a 57-24 lead in the game.

 

Something the Mountaineers work on every day, free throws, were an advantage in the first half with the Mountaineers shooting 15-for-19 from the line and the Owls shooting just 1-of-5.

 

The Mountaineers enjoyed a long period of prosperity at the beginning of the second half with a 24-2 run to open things up. Appalachian rolled from there to the 68-point victory for its first win of the season and the third home opening win for head coach Jim Fox

 

Appalachian State returns to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 23 when it travels to Hartford. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m. from Connecticut's capital city. 

 

Notes: Appalachian State broke the Holmes Center record for points in a game with 119 (previous record was 113 against Milligan on Dec. 17, 2010 … the 68-point margin of victory was the best in program history (previous best was 65 points against Milligan on Dec. 30, 2008) … the Mountaineers boasted five double-digit scorers to extend its streak of at least four in three-straight games … in his last two games, Patrick Good is 13-for-17 from the field and 9-for-13 from three-point land with 37 points … Appalachian has seven players averaging at least 8.0 points per game with three averaging double-figures … the Black and Gold are averaging 95.7 points per game this year.
