Eagles Escape Holmes Center with 101-100 Win
Box Score BOONE, N.C. -- Georgia Southern's Mike Hughes completed a four-point play with 0.8 seconds to go to hand Appalachian State University men's basketball a heartbreaking 101-100 loss on Monday evening at the Holmes Center.

Appalachian State (5-14, 3-5 Sun Belt) took a 100-97 lead on two free throws by Jacob Lawson with 5.5 seconds left but Hughes raced down the floor and tied the score a long three-pointer. As Hughes fell to the ground following the shot, Appalachian's Chris Burgess was whistled for the game's 59th foul and Hughes made the ensuing free throw to give Georgia Southern (7-11, 3-5 Sun Belt) a 101-100 lead.

With just 0.8 seconds remaining on the clock, the Mountaineers attempted to pass the ball the length of the court but toss went out of bounds and the Eagles took over. GS inbounded the ball harmlessly to seal the come-from-behind victory.

Frank Eaves and Ronshad Shabazz combined for 66 of App State's 100 points with 37 and 29, respectively. Jake Babic finished with seven points and seven rebounds. The seven boards from Babic led App State on the night. Tookie Brown led five Eagles in double-figures with 34 points.

Eaves tied two Holmes Center records with nine made three-pointers and his 37 total points on the night. Shabazz set a new career-high with 29 points - his previous best was a 21-point performance at then No. 7 North Carolina on Dec. 21.

Both teams see-sawed in the early minutes of the game and Georgia Southern would grab a 17-13 advantage. App State would won go on a 6-2 run and the game would be tied 19-19 at the 13:41 mark of the opening half. With just 2:02 left in the half, a Shawn O'Connell layup for the Eagles would put them ahead 46-35.

The Black and Gold would finish the half strong on a 7-0 run keyed by an Eaves three would bring the Mountaineers to within just four at the half - trailing GS 46-42.

App State would begin the second half on a 7-0 run to give them 14 unanswered points in the contest and a 49-46 lead. A layup from Tyrell Johnson and a three from Eaves would precede a vicious dunk from Shabazz to cap the perfect run. The Eagles would would hit a three, but App State responded with four more points and give themselves an 18-3 run and a 53-49 lead with 17:41 left.

With App State leading 59-53, the Eagles would construct a 7-0 run to take a 60-59 advantage. With a couple lead changes, the Apps were able to regain a multiple possession lead at 67-62 following two free throws from Eaves. The Apps would answer each shot for the Eagles and maintain its lead at 79-73 with 8:19 to go.

The Eagles would begin to chip away to the Mountaineer lead and would trail by two points at 85-83 at the 5:19 mark. The Apps would get buckets from Shabazz, Eaves, Babic and an emphatic dunk from Lawson to keep the Eagles at bay and lead 94-86 with 2:48 left.

In a span of 42 seconds, Georgia Southern went on a 7-0 run to close the App State lead to just 94-93. Lawson hit two free throws and threw down a fastbreak slam to give App State a 98-95 lead with 48 seconds left. Both teams traded two free throws and App State led 100-97. What ensued ended up deciding the game on the four-point play from Hughes.

The Mountaineers will return to the court on Thursday, January 28 when they travel to Troy for an 8:30 p.m. ET tipoff. Following Troy, the Apps will travel to Mobile, Ala. and take on South Alabama on Saturday, January 30. Tip time for that game is slated for 8:05 p.m. ET.
