WASHINGTON, D.C. - Appalachian State University field hockey had a 1-0 lead just over seven minutes into the match against Brown. However, after the Bears tied the game at 1-1 in the second half, they scored again on the final play of the contest giving the Mountaineers a heartbreaking loss.
“As a team, we had our best start of the year and one of our team goals was to score in the first 10 minutes, which we accomplished,” said head coach Meghan Dawson. “We improved our stepping up to the ball in the midfield and backfield, which had a direct result in keeping the game close.”
App State fell to 1-2 overall while Brown earned its first win of the season to improve to 1-1. The Black and Gold's lone goal came from Jordan Van Cleave (second of the season) seven minutes and 13 seconds in thanks to an assist from Taylor Cimbalist (team-leading fourth of the season). The conversion was from a corner before Van Cleave's shot from the left wing.
The Bears evened things up with a goal just over 11 minutes into the second period and the score stayed like that for the next 23 minutes and change. With no time left on the clock, Brown converted on its fifth and final corner attempt of the game to come out on top, 2-1.
“Brown is a really tough opponent who pushed the entire game, had a ton of speed up front and worked well together,” added Dawson. “I am proud of the girls for their effort and we realize this is a step in our journey to continue to get better everyday.”
Caroline Phillips led the offensive charge with five shots and Van Cleave tallied three while Cimbalist and Abby Carls each had one. In goal, Cristina Ceppi stopped two shots aside from two goals allowed.
Appalachian State remains in the nation's capital on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start against the host school, American.
