Volleyball Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker to Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –– For the second consecutive match, Appalachian State University volleyball dropped a five-set heartbreaker – this time to the host Virginia Cavaliers, 3-2.

The Mountaineers (3-3) found themselves down 10-7 midway through the first set, but were propelled ahead of the Cavaliers (3-1) after a 10-2 run that put the Apps up 17-12 which prompted a timeout from Virginia. The run for App State was highlighted by two kills from Ashton Gregory and one from Emily Corrigan.

Two Corrigan kills at the end of the set, combined with two Cavalier errors sealed the set for the Mountaineers, 25-20.

Virginia raced off to a quick start in the second set and found themselves ahead 20-9 and in control of the set. At 3-2, the Cavaliers got a kill from Anna Walsh followed by three-straight service aces.

Then another stretch with the score 10-5, Virginia rallied off of a service ace and two Mountaineer attack errors. Once the lead reached 12 for the Cavaliers, each point for Appalachian was matched and Virginia took the set 25-13.

Appalachian returned the favor in the third set and dominated for a 25-15 set victory. Up by two points at 12-10, the Mountaineers finished the set on a 13-5 run. Jess Keller tallied four-straight kills for the Apps, while Corrigan's kill at 24-15 ended the set and put App State up 2-1 in the match.

The fourth set's momentum see-sawed back to the hosts when the Cavaliers found five-straight points at 19-18 and put away the set with a kill from Kayla Sears to win 25-19. Down 16-12, App State made it close on a 6-3 run to cut the deficit to one, but it wouldn't be enough.

For the second-straight match, App State found themselves in a decisive fifth set. After much back and forth, the Cavaliers created some space and notched three-straight points with the score 11-10.

At 14-10, a service error, Keller ace and back-to-back kills from Corrigan put the Mountaineers back in business and tied the score at 14-14. Neither team would relent and points would be matched on both sides with six tied scores to get to 19-19.

With score 19-19, the Cavaliers got a kill from Natalie Bausback and Mountaineer attack error ended the dramatics with Virginia winning the set 21-19.

After setting a season-high in assists on Friday against Iowa State, Paige Brown topped her total against the Cavaliers. The senior setter recorded 59 assists to lead the Mountaineer offense. Brown also contributed 13 digs for her third double-double of the season.

Corrigan and Keller led the attack with 22 and 21 kills, respectively. Corrigan also tallied 15 digs to mark her first double-double this season. Gregory finished in double-digits with 12 kills. Leading the defensive front, Meghan Mahoney once again led the team with 19 digs.
