Women's Soccer Draws with UNCG, 1-1

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Appalachian State University women's soccer took on former SoCon rival UNC Greensboro on Sunday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium. App State and UNCG tied, 1-1, after two overtime periods.

"I thought we played good soccer tonight," said head coach Sarah Strickland. "Jenn Bass scored a great goal off a phenomenal shot by Sam Childress. UNCG played a very direct style and battled for every ball."

The Mountaineers (4-3-2) struck first in the 29th minute with some incredible build-up play. Childress gathered a pass on the left side and launched a left-to-right curling shot from 30 yards out that bounced off the right post.

Bass was there to collect the rebound and fired a shot, over a diving Sarah Peatross, into the back of the net to give App State a one-goal lead. The goal was the first of the season for Bass. Childress was credited with the assist.

App State out shot the Spartans (2-6-2) 11-5 and took the 1-0 advantage into the break.

UNCG continued to battle and were rewarded with an equalizing goal in the 75th minute. Candice Forbes gathered a rebounded shot in the box and scored from eight yards out.

The score remained level through the end of regulation and the two teams headed to overtime. The Apps recorded two shots and one corner in the overtime periods but were unable to score the goal-ahead goal.

Megan Roberson played 102 minutes in the game and made four saves before being relieved by Sam Steyl.

Strickland and her team are excited to the start of Sun Belt Conference play.

"We will definitely work this week and are looking forward to opening conference play at home on Friday."

The Mountaineers start their Sun Belt slate against Arkansas State on Friday at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
