ATHENS, Ohio - Appalachian State University field hockey had just five total shots to Ohio's 22 as the Bobcats handed the Mountaineers their first shutout loss of the season, 4-0.
"Today, we faced great competition in a talented Ohio team," said head coach Meghan Dawson. "We played a decent first half and held them to only one goal. They are a strong team that pointed out some areas we need to work on and we will continue working to get better this week at practice."
With the defeat, App State dropped to 1-5 on the season while Ohio got back to .500 at 3-3 and notched its first home win of 2015. The home team also held the advantage in corners 17-5 while Appalachian State tallied 12 saves to the Bobcats' three.
The hosts scored once in the first half before three second-period goals, two of which came from Adele Sammons. Those two scores were her first two of the season, one of which came on the final play of the game.
Caroline Phillips was the lone Mountaineer with multiple shots as she attempted to score twice and in goal, Cristina Ceppi was busy all day as she racked up 12 saves aside from the four goals allowed.
Next up, App State will finally host its 2015 home opener on Friday, Sept. 18 in Boone against James Madison beginning at 3 p.m.
