BOONE, N.C. – In its second match of the day, Appalachian State University volleyball made quick work of in-state foe Charlotte in a straight-set sweep to close the Appalachian Invitational on Saturday evening.

“Another weekend where we bounce back to sweep an opponent. It was a great finish to our weekend,” said head coach Matt Ginipro. “Our offense continues to be a strength and we will continue to improve on the defensive side of the ball. We need to finish our non-conference season strong against Western Carolina on Tuesday before we start Sun Belt play.”

The Mountaineers (6-4) came out firing on all cylinders in the opening set. App State created some breathing room and led Charlotte 15-10 midway through. However, the Black and Gold finished off the set on a 10-3 run, which included three-straight kills from Jess Keller to set down the Niners.

The second set remained much closer than the first and Charlotte actually led at one point, 13-10. A 7-0 rally from the Mountaineers quickly erased the 49ers' advantage. Three errors, kills from Paige Brown, Ashton Gregory and a service ace from Emily Corrigan fueled the run.

The 49ers would rally three-straight points to bring it to within one and eventually tie the match at 19-19 and again at 20-20. A kill from Keller and Corrigan led a 3-0 run and led App State to a 25-21 set victory and 2-0 stranglehold on the match.

Sniffing the opportunity for a straight-set sweep, App State garnered control of the third set from the get-go. With a narrow 9-8 advantage, the Black and Gold took off on a 11-4 run for a commanding 20-12 lead. At 16-10, Corrigan tallied three-straight kills for App State.

The Mountaineers and 49ers would trade points the rest of the way, but with the lead App State built for itself, the sweep was completed with a 25-18 set three victory.

Brown ran the offense to a tee with 35 assists, while Keller and Corrigan finished with 13 and 12 kills, respectively, en route to garnering all-tournament honors. Meghan Mahoney was the only Mountaineer to record double-digit digs with 23. Appalachian held Charlotte to just a .150 hitting percentage in the match, while hitting .269 themselves.

The Mountaineers will return to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 15 when they host in-state foe and former Southern Conference rival Western Carolina for a non-conference match. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. from the Holmes Center.
