Box Score CLEMSON, S.C. –– Appalachian State University volleyball took control of the match in the first set and kept the pedal to the metal en route to a sweep of the Clemson Tigers on Saturday evening.
The Mountaineers (2-1) bounced back in a strong way after falling to UNCW earlier in the day. App State dominated the opening set from the get-go. Appalachian got out to a 12-2 lead behind three kills from Emily Corrigan.
From there, the Apps would not let the lead dip below six points and would finish off the Tigers 25-16 in the first set. A balanced attack in the first set, led by Paige Brown, included four student-athletes with at least three kills – Ashton Gregory led with five kills.
The second set was much more of a back and forth battle. Both teams clawed to an 11-11 tie before Clemson rallied for three points and kept at least a one-point advantage until App State tied it at 22-22. Down 22-19, the Mountaineers' got three-straight kills to bring it back to even.
After two Tiger kills, a kill from Corrigan and a Tiger attacking error knotted the score at 24. The set would see-saw from there and would remained tied at 28-28. The Mountaineers would pull through with two-straight kills from Alana Shoff and Corrigan to take the set 30-28.
With a firm grasp on the match and a commanding 2-0 lead, Appalachian jumped out to a 12-5 advantage – posting an 8-1 run with the score tied 4-4. The Black and Gold would not relent and would cruise to a 25-14 win in set three to clinch the sweep.
The balanced attack the Mountaineers set up for themselves in the first set continued through to the end. App State was led by Gregory with 14 kills, while Vera Horstmann contributed 10. With Brown running the offense with 42 assists, five student-athletes posted at least seven kills.
Meghan Mahoney paced the defensive effort with 15 digs, while Brown tallied 12 of her own. Both Brown and Jess Keller were named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of the Big Orange Bash.
Prior to the Mountaineers triumph on Saturday night, Appalachian was just 1-10 all-time against the TIgers. The lone win came on Sept. 16, 2000 when the Mountaineers downed the Tigers, 3-1.
The Apps will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 1 for their home opener against in-state foe, Gardner-Webb. The match is slated for 6:30 p.m. from the Holmes Center.
