Volleyball Sweeps CSU in 2015 Season Opener

CLEMSON, S.C. –– Appalachian State University volleyball dominated in all facets of their season-opening match against Charleston Southern on Friday afternoon.

The Mountaineers (1-0) made it look easy against the Buccaneers (0-1) with a three-set sweep (25-11, 25-17, 25-16). Senior outside hitter Jess Keller led the Mountaineers with 16 kills, while senior setter and 2015 Sun Belt preseason Setter of the Year Paige Brown tallied 31 assists.

With the first set knotted at 2-2, the Mountaineers went on an 11-2 run to take a 13-5 advantage, highlighted by five kills from Keller in that span. App State would not look back in the first set and behind a 12-6 run would put away the Bucs 25-11.

Following the first set, the Mountaineers carried a team attack percentage of .344, which included 13 kills on 32 total attacks.

The second set would be more back and forth than the first. With the score tied at 9-9, the Apps would rally a 16-8 run to shutdown the Bucs again 25-17. Brown added nine assists, while Keller once again led with six kills. Senior Emily Corrigan was attributed with four kills and newcomer Ashton Gregory was right behind with three kills of her own.

As a team in the second set, App State generated 17 kills on 34 total attacks to earn a .382 attack percentage. Also through two sets, senior libero Meghan Mahoney led with a team-high eight digs.

Appalachian State got out to a commanding 11-2 advantage in the third set to keep a firm grasp on the match. The Mountaineers finished off the Bucs with a 14-12 see-saw battle in the second half of the set to down the Bucs 25-16 and complete the sweep.

Leading the match with 16 kills, Keller finished with five more in the third and final set, while Gregory tallied four and 10 for the match. Mahoney finished with 16 digs - eight of which came in the final set.

The Black and Gold will return to the court tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. when they face-off against UNCW in their second match of the Big Orange Bash. The Apps will finish the tournament tomorrow evening with a match against host Clemson at 7 p.m.
