Mountaineers Drop Second Exhibition at Davidson

Davidson, N.C. - Appalachian State University field hockey was on the road Saturday for its second exhibition of the preseason but dropped a 7-0 decision to Davidson at Carol Grotnes Belk Turf Field.

In the beginning, the matchup was back and forth and both teams had their fair share of opportunities. However, the Wildcats scored, took the wind out of the Mountaineers and then continued to keep the pressure on.

"We didn't come out with the fire we had in the first exhibition against Limestone," said head coach Meghan Dawson. "We had our opportunities in the beginning and throughout the entire match, but we were unable to produce a goal."

The home team scored three in the first period, three more in the second period and tacked on another score in a third period in which the teams worked on 7 vs. 7 situations.

"We did have some great moments of play where we moved the ball around quickly and were able to draw some penalty corners or a scoring opportunity," said Dawson. "Davidson wanted to win so badly and that was evident. They were a very determined team with good basics."

The Apps will have a chance to avenge this loss as they will host the Wildcats on Sunday, Oct. 11 in their second-to-last home match of the regular season.

"This decision produced a great learning experience for us as a team and showed us how to move forward together," said Dawson. "We all saw good moments to take with us and those showed us the team that we can grow into."

Appalachian State will play its third exhibition in as many days on Sunday when it travels to Wake Forest for a 4 p.m. start.
