BOONE, N.C. — Several former, current and future Appalachian State University baseball standouts are expected to be among the approximately 1,200 players that are selected in the 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, which begins on Monday evening and runs through Wednesday.
Headlining Appalachian State's potential MLB draftees is junior outfielder
Jaylin Davis. Despite playing in only 18 games this season due to an arm injury sustained on a diving catch versus Texas State on March 14, Davis is ranked No. 370 in Baseball America's list of the top 500 prospects in this year's draft.
Other top targets from the Mountaineers' 2015 club could include junior infielder
Dillon Dobson, senior infielder
Michael Pierson and senior right-handed pitchers
Jeffrey Springs,
Taylor Thurber and
Robert Whaley.
Additionally, RHP/IF
Breydan Gorham, RHP
Seth Hardin, OF
Tanner Mann-Fix, OF
Beau Myers and OF/LHP
Colin Schmid are among the players from Appalachian State's incoming freshman class that could hear their names called this week.
High school players that have graduated but not yet attended a four-year college, junior-college players and four-year college players who have either completed their junior or senior years or are at least 21 years old are eligible for the MLB Draft. A draftee has until Aug. 15 to decide if he will sign with the club that selected him or attend/return to his four-year college and continue his amateur career.
Seventeen Appalachian State student-athletes (not including incoming freshmen) have been selected in the Major League Draft since 2008. A program-record four Mountaineers were drafted in 2009 (Zach Quate, Rand Smith, Isaac Harrow and Josh Dowdy), 2012 (Nathan Hyatt, Tyler Tewell, Seth Grant and Ryan Arrowood) and 2013 (Rob Marcello, Sam Agnew-Wieland, Hector Crespo and Will Callaway). Four former Mountaineers are currently playing affiliated minor-league baseball (Hyatt, Arrowood, Callaway and Jeremy Dowdy).
The 2015 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft begins on Monday at 7 p.m. with Rounds 1-2. Rounds 3-10 will be held on Tuesday and Rounds 11-40 will be conducted on Wednesday.
