Baseball Drops Series Opener at UALR, 2-1

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — Appalachian State University baseball dropped a heart breaker to University of Arkansas at Little Rock on Friday. The Trojans hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning to claim game one of the weekend series.

Reigning Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week, Taylor Thurber pitched brilliantly. Thurber threw eight and two third innings with six strikeouts, one walk, and only allowed two runs on four hits.

The senior gave up one run in the first inning but then settled down. Thurber retired 13 straight Trojans spanning from the first inning to the end of the fifth.

Dillon Dobson, the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Week, continued his hot hitting and smashed his team-leading seventh home run over the right field wall in the first inning to give Appalachian a quick 1-0 lead. Dobson went 2-for-4 and was one of two Mountaineers with hit on the day.

After a 12 hit outing against Wake Forest on Wednesday, the Mountaineer bats went quite. Outside of Dobson the Apps went 1-for-23 with nine strikeouts against UALR.

The Trojan offense wasn't very effect either, but timely hits with runners in scoring positions in the first and ninth innings allowed them to win the first ever meeting between the two schools.

With another tough-luck loss, the Mountaineers fall to 2-10 this season in games decided by two runs or less

The Mountaineers continue their Sun Belt series versus UALR tomorrow. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
