Mountaineers Cap Off Road Slate at Georgia State

BOONE, N.C. – With just one more road contest left, Appalachian State University men's basketball heads to Georgia State for a Sun Belt Conference showdown at 2 p.m. at GSU Sports Arena.

The Mountaineers (9-15, 6-9 Sun Belt) are looking to put Thursday's loss at UT Arlington behind them and complete the season swee of the Panthers (18-8. 11-4), who enter the weekend on a three-game winning streak.

Saturday's contest is the final road game of the season. Appalachian returns home next week to begin a season-ending, four-game homestand.

SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
•     Georgia State enters the weekend at 18-8 overall and 11-4 in conference play.

•    The Panthers are tied for second place in the Sun Belt standings with Georgia Southern, but the Eagles defeated the Panthers in their first matchup this season.

•    GSU is currently riding a three-game winning streak that includes a pair of victories over South Alabama and a road win at Texas State.

•    Georgia State has been tremendous at home this season as it has compiled a 10-1 record at GSU Sports Arena.

•    That home record includes a 7-1 mark in conference play. GSU's only Sun Belt home loss came in a 77-74, double overtime loss to Texas State on Jan. 5.

•    The Panthers are led by the top two scorers in the Sun Belt in Ryan Harrow (20.4 ppg) and R.J. Hunter (19.8).

•    However, Harrow has not played in the last two games and his status for Saturday is uncertain.

•    In addition to their outstanding scoring prowess, Harrow and Hunter have combined to dish out 184 of Georgia State's 360 assists this season (51.1 percent).

•    A fast start has been the key to the Panthers' success this season as they have outscored opponents 883-710 in the first half.

•    Markus Crider has helped buoy the play of Harrow and Hunter as he leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per game.

SERIES HISTORY
•     Appalachian State is 3-0 all-time against Georgia State, including a massive 74-69 upset on Jan. 17 in Boone.

•    The teams have not played in Atlanta since Dec. 12, 1988 when App State picked up an 86-84 victory.

•    A win by the Mountaineers on Saturday would be Appalachian's second season-sweep of a Sun Belt opponent this year (Troy).

•    Appalachian State is 39-33 all-time against current Sun Belt members, but 43 of those contests have come against Georgia Southern (25-18) which was a longtime SoCon rival

•    With a victory on Saturday, Appalachian would become the first conference foe to sweep the season series with Georgia State since Drexel in 2012-13, when GSU was a member of the Colonial Athletic Association.

•    The Mountaineers are 3-6 in league road games, but are 4-3 in Saturday games in Sun Belt play.

UP NEXT
•    Appalachian caps off the year with four-straight home games from Feb. 26 - March 7. The stretch includes a rematch with arch rival Georgia Southern on Feb. 26.
