Mistakes Prove Costly in Men's Hoops Loss at UTA
Box Score ARLINGTON, Texas – A second-half surge by the home team and a myriad of mistakes throughout the game proved too much to overcome as Appalachian State University men's basketball fell on the road to UT Arlington, 81-68, on Thursday night in Sun Belt Conference action at College Park Center.

The Mountaineers (9-15, 6-9 Sun Belt) took a 34-32 lead into the half, but the Mavericks (16-10, 9-6) outscored Appalachian 49-34 in the second half to send App State to its third-straight loss. Appalachian also turned the ball over a season-high 26 times and the Mavs took full advantage as they picked up their third win in their last four games.

UTA was able to build a 15-10 lead with 10:42 to go in the opening period, but Frank Eaves hit back-to-back three pointers to give the Apps a 16-15 lead almost two minutes later. Both teams traded blows of the next several minutes until, with the score tied at 19-19 and 6:57 to go, the Mavericks reeled off a 6-0 run to take a 25-19 lead with just over five minutes remaining.

Appalachian responded by hitting five-straight free throws to cut the deficit to one (25-24) with 4:26 to go, but UT Arlington connected from deep to push the lead back to four points on the next possession. Despite the deficit, App State ended the first half on a 10-4 run to take a two-point lead into the locker room.

Eaves scored 16 of his team-high 20 in the first half to help stake the Mountaineers to the lead, but UT Arlington came out on fire over the final 20 minutes, shooting 56.3 percent (18-of-32) in the second half.

Greg Gainey tied things up at 34-34 when he scored the first bucket of the second half, but Appalachian was able to hold steady and clung to a two-point lead (45-43) with 15:12 to play.

That's when the Mavericks caught fire and scored on four-straight possessions over the next minute to grab a five-point lead (52-47) and never trailed the rest of the way. UT Arlington pushed the lead to seven (60-53) when Lonnie McLanahan connected on a jumper at the 10:01 mark.

App State was able to cut the deficit to just four points (62-58) with 7:53 remaining, but could not complete the comeback as the Mavericks grabbed a double-digit lead (74-63) on Gainey's dunk with 3:36 to play that essentially sealed the deal.

Eaves led the Mountaineers with a team-best 20 points on 5-of-11 from the floor and was 7-of-7 at the free-throw line, but scored just four points in the second half and committed six turnovers. Tommy Spagnolo scored 10 and grabbed a game-high eight boards while Landon Goesling poured in nine off the bench.

McLanahan led UTA with 21 points while Gainey finished with 19 points and six boards. Kevin Hervey scored 15 points in 22 minutes off the bench and Erick Neal tallied 11 while dishing out six assists.
