BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University men's track and field won its first indoor meet of the 2015-16 season on Saturday with the Appalachian Open. The Mountaineers totaled 133.5 points and took home first in five events including the triple jump, 55-meter hurdles, 800, 200-meter dash, and 55-meter dash.
Kimani Hoffman was the winner in the triple jump (47-9.75) while Isaiah Relliford placed third with a distance of 46-9.50. In the 55-meter hurdles, Stanley Broaden picked up right where he left off from last season's outdoor success and won with a time of 7.65. Andrew Spear took third in that event and was clocked at 7.94.
Ryan Hastings came in at first for the 800 (1:54.44) and Peter Ovendorf was sixth (2:00.57). William Buckley was the champion in the 200 (22.04) and Antonio Marcano Jr. was right behind him in second (22.15). Marcano Jr. also won the 55-meter dash (6.42) and Buckley came in at second (6.43).
App State also received top-three finishes from Nathan Milch in the weight throw (third/58-3.00/eighth in program history), Phillip Thomas in the pole vault (second/15-7.00), Milch in the shot put (second/53-7.00), and Trey Edgerton, Broaden, Buckley, and Hastings in the 4x300 (second/2:23.41).
For the team standings, Western Carolina came in at second with 126.5 points, Gardner-Webb was third (67.5), Winthrop was fourth (36.5), and Wofford rounded out the top five with 32 points.
The Black and Gold's next event isn't until Jan. 8-9 with the ETSU Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.
