Mountaineers Drop Tough One on the Road at Texas
Box Score AUSTIN, Texas – Appalachian State University men's basketball battled all night long against the Texas Longhorns, but came up short in the end and fell on the wrong side of a 67-55 decision in Austin on Tuesday night.

The Mountaineers (2-7) went back and forth with a Longhorn team who was coming off an 84-82 victory over No. 3 North Carolina last Saturday on a game-winning shot at the buzzer. Frank Eaves led the Black and Gold in scoring with 20 points on 7-of-18 shooting, including a nearly perfect 6-for-8 from beyond the arc.

Mike Kobani contributed highest minute total of the season (10) and turned in a Mountaineer-best seven boards, four of which came on the offensive glass. The seven rebounds for Kobani were a season high. Emarius Logan chipped in eight points and six boards.

Transfer junior Matt O'Boyle (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain/Pima Community College) added a season-high six points on 2-of-2 shooting from the three-point line.

The Mountaineers and Longhorns (7-3) struggled in the early going from the field and entered the first media timeout with Texas leading 4-2 and were a combined 3-for-15 from the field. Appalachian then engineered a 7-0 run sparked by two free throws from Logan and followed up by a three from Jake Babic and an emphatic dunk by Jacob Lawson that posterized a Longhorn defender.

Texas quickly answered with a 7-0 run of their own with a tip-in from Cameron Ridley and five-straight points from Kendal Yancy. Ridley proved to be a force for the Longhorns and generated a team-high 19 points, 11 rebounds and a school-record nine blocked shots. As a team, Texas swatted 15 shots and totally altered the Mountaineers' game inside the paint.

Down 11-9, App State then constructed an 8-0 run to go up 17-11 with 9:33 to go in the first half, which was answered, yet again, by a Texas 10-0 run. App State would get to within one at 21-20, but the Longhorns outscored the Mountaineers 13-7 and took a 34-27 lead into the break.

Texas' first two possessions of the second half resulted in buckets to push its lead to nine at 38-29. With the score 42-34 and 16:36 left, App State closed to within six at 46-40 before an Eaves' three keyed a 8-2 run to knot the score at 48-48. During the run, App State got back-to-back threes from Eaves and two Lawson foul shots.

At this point, Texas took advantage of the inside game and put the game out of reach on a 15-0 run to take a commanding 63-48 lead with just 1:57 left in the game. After being tied 48-48 at the 9:29 mark, App State would go the next 7:54 without a point. During the run, Ridley went on a tear and scored 11 points to help boost the Longhorn advantage and lead Texas to a 67-55 win.

For the game, App State would be outscored in special teams points 36-6 in the paint, 17-11 in points off turnovers and 12-7 in second chance points.

Appalachian shot just 30 percent (18-of-60) from the floor, but a blistering 60 percent (12-of-20) from the three-point line.

The Mountaineers will return to the court on Saturday, Dec. 19 when they host regional rival Charlotte at 2 p.m. from the Holmes Center.
