NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Appalachian State University men's basketball set a Challenge in Music City tournament record by shooting 67.4 percent (31-for-46) from the floor, but committed 28 turnovers that led to 37 points for Stephen F. Austin and would fall to the Lumberjacks 94-84 on Sunday. You would have to go back to December 30, 2013 for the last time Appalachian shot as well from the floor as they did on Sunday. In a game against Bluefield College, App State shot 63.2 percent (36-for-57).

The Mountaineers (2-5) had four student-athletes finish in double-figures on the night. Frank Eaves notched 19, while Ronshad Shabazz and Chris Burgess each tallied 18 a piece. The total for Shabazz was a new career high after scoring 17 in a win over Liberty on Thursday.

Griffin Kinney also finished with double-digit points by matching his career high with 14. The four leading scorers for the Black and Gold finshed a combined 25-for-38 - good for 65.7 percent from the floor.

Appalachian State came out on fire and shot a robust 75 percent (18-of-24) from the field in the opening half. The Mountaineers started out 6-for-7 from the field and had themselves a 13-11 lead at the 15:01 mark of the first half. The Lumberjacks (3-3) would come out of the first media timeout and promptly go on a 7-0 run to gain a five-point lead at 18-13.

Stephen F. Austin's first half lead would grow to as many as nine at one point, 31-22. Appalachian, however, would engineer an 8-2 run keyed by Shabazz getting to the foul line and hitting both free throws. The run took just 47 seconds for the Apps and they would bring themselves to within three points at 33-30 with 7:49 left in the half.

Both teams would match points for the next few minutes, but an 11-5 run from the Lumberjacks gave SFA its biggest lead of the first half at 50-40 with 2:20 to play. Once again, an 8-0 run that used just 57 seconds off the game clock brought App State to within two at 50-48. The run consisted of five-straight points from Shabazz followed by an Eaves three-pointer. The Lumberjacks would hit a three with 35 seconds left and App State would take a five-point deficit into the locker room.

App State turned the ball over 12 times in the first half, which led to 18 Stephen F. Austin points. The Lumberjacks also outscored the Mountaineers 31-18 in points in the paint and 8-5 in second-chance points.

Out of the break, Appalachian got back-to-back buckets from Eaves and Shabazz and were quickly to within one at 53-52 just 1:11 into the second half. Over the next 3:17, the Lumberjacks constructed an 11-1 run that put them back up by double digits at 64-53. The Mountaineers were kept to a distance for much of the half and trailed by its largest deficit in the game 86-70 with 5:06 to play.

The closest App State would get the rest of the way was 10 points following a Kinney layup with 26 seconds left in regulation.

For his efforts, Shabazz was named to the all-tournament team following the conclusion of the Mountaineers game against the Lumberjacks.

Appalachian will return to action on Sunday, Dec. 6 when they travel to the Big Apple and take on Hofstra from the “World's Most Famous Arena” Madison Square Garden. Tipoff from The Garden is slated for 1 p.m.
