Shooting Woes Doom App State in New Orleans
Box Score NEW ORLEANS – Appalachian State University men's basketball shot a dismal 20.7 (6-for-29) percent from the field in the first half and could not overcome an 10-0 Tulane run to begin the game and fell 76-48 at Devlin Fieldhouse on Sunday.

The Mountaineers (1-3) were held scoreless until the 15:13 mark of the first half when Griffin Kinney provided a great post move and parlayed it into an easy layup. Kinney led the Mountaineers with 14 points and six rebounds.

After not scoring for the opening 4:47 of the game, Appalachian went the next 4:09 without a bucket until Kinney drilled a baseline jumper. A 9-0 Green Wave run would be halted by a 5-0 run from the Apps. Frank Eaves poured in three of his 11 points followed by a Kinney jumper.

After a 10-0 run from Tulane, App State would outscore the Green Wave 7-5 to finish the half. Eaves hit another three, Landon Goesling and Kinney hit three free throws.

The Black and Gold would come out of the locker room and strike first with an Eaves three-pointer. The Mountaineers began to find consistent offense with buckets from Chris Burgess and Michael Obacha.

A slew of App State freshmen began to get involved beginning with a Tyrell Johnson jumper on a possession kept alive by an Emarius Logan offensive board. Johnson would hit another jumper followed by a Ronshad Shabazz layup and Logan jumper.

In the second half, the Mountaineers would outscore Tulane in the paint 20-16, in points off turnovers 12-0 and second-chance points 9-2. Overall, App State tied Tulane 31-31 in the second half of play.

Nine Mountaineers scored points on the night, including six from Johnson, five from Bennett Holley, four from Goesling and two each from Shabazz, Obacha, Burgess and Logan.

The Mountaineers will return to action on Thursday, Nov. 26 when they play in their first game of the 2015 Challenge in Music City tournament in Nashville, Tenn. App State will face-off against Liberty at 3 p.m. ET. They will also play Mercer on Friday, Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. ET.
