Box Score HAMPTON, Va. – 22 points from Frank Eaves wouldn't be enough for Appalachian State University men's basketball to overcome a double-digit deficit in the second half and fell on the road at Hampton 82-61.

The Mountaineers (1-2) got off to a quick and solid start in the first half. The Black and Gold went on a 9-5 run in the opening minutes to build a 23-19 lead. The run was keyed by a jumper from Jacob Lawson and was capped by a matching three-pointer from Eaves.

In nearly eight minutes to start the game, Eaves poured in 14 of the Mountaineers' 23 total points. With a 23-19 lead, Hampton then went on a 12-0 run to open up an eight-point advantage, which spanned a 6:46 scoreless drought for the Apps. The Mountaineers would get the deficit to four points on two different occasions.

The first time, App State went on a small 4-0 run down 38-30 initiated and carried out by Ronshad Shabazz. Shabazz scored a layup and added two free throws. Following two free throws from Eaves to cut the deficit to 40-36, Hampton's Trevond Barnes hit a jumper with three second left in the half to give the Pirates a 42-36 lead into the break.

Appalachian came out of the locker room in the second half firing. Immediately, Griffin Kinney scooped in a layup which was followed up by Chris Burgess splashing a triple to bring the Pirate lead to within one point at 42-41.

The Mountaineers would be answered by a 7-0 run from the Pirates, which opened up a 49-41 lead. A layup and free throw from Eaves and a jumper from Kinney got the Apps to within six points at 51-46, however, a 7-2 run would put the Pirates back up by 10 at 58-48.

After a free throw from Burgess, Hampton engineered an 21-13 run to end the game.

Eaves and Shabazz were the only Mountaineers to finish in double figures. Eaves finished 8-of-12 from the field, 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and 3-for-3 from the charity stripe. Shabazz finished with 12 and shot 4-of-10 from the floor.

As a team, the Mountaineers shot 40.7 percent from the floor in the first half, but just 29.4 percent in the second half. Hampton finished with 16 second-chance points and out-rebounded the Mountaineers 49-35.

The Mountaineers will return to action on Sunday, Nov. 22 when they travel to New Orleans, La. and face-off against Tulane. Tipoff is slated 4:30 p.m. ET on ESPN3.
