Box Score JONESBORO, Ark. – Appalachian State University volleyball fell to Arkansas State for the second-straight match on Thursday night, 3-0. The loss give Appalachian consecutive losses for the just the second time this season and marks just the first time all year that the Black and Gold have been swept in straight sets.
The Mountaineers (20-6, 13-2 Sun Belt) were limited to just a .186 attack percentage and did not have a student-athlete record double-digit kills for the first time this season.
Jess Keller led App State with nine kills, while
Alana Shoff tallied eight and
Courtney Sullivan notched seven kills.
Ashton Gregory tallied six and
Emily Corrigan notched five.
The Sun Belt's assist leader,
Paige Brown, finished with 33 assists on the night, while on the defensive end of things,
Meghan Mahoney was the only Mountaineer to tally double-digit digs with 10.
In the opening set, the Red Wolves got out to a commanding 19-7 lead with the help of four kills from Drew Jones and three-straight service aces during the run. The lead was too much for Appalachian to overcome and A-State would take the set and early momentum with a convincing 25-13 set victory.
The second set was a battle for the first half of the set. A-State and Appalachian traded points early on with the Mountaineers chipping away and finding themselves down 11-10 almost midway through. The Mountaineers received kills from four different student-athletes during that span and were aided offensively by Keller, Shoff, Gregory and Sullivan.
At 11-10, however, the Red Wolves would snap off a set-changing 8-2 run to take a 19-13 advantage. The Black and Gold would battle back and find points with kills from Sullivan, Corrigan and Keller, but it wouldn't be enough. App State got the deficit to just four at 22-18, but couldn't get any closer and fell 25-20.
Much like the match had played out, both teams traded points early in the third set. In a game of runs for Arkansas State, they had another up their sleeve in the third and final set of the night. Albeit small, A-State would generate an 11-6 run to open up a 19-13 advantage. In front of 2,517 Red Wolves fans, it was momentum and a lead that A-State would not relinquish. The Red Wolves would take the set 25-20.
Appalachian will face-off against Little Rock on Friday, Nov. 13 to close its regular season schedule. FIrst serve for the match is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET.
