Field Hockey Set to Host Saint Louis and Davidson

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University field hockey will wrap up its six-game homestand this weekend with a pair of 1 p.m. contests against Atlantic 10 opponents in Saint Louis on Saturday and Davidson on Sunday.

For the first time in nearly three weeks, the Mountaineers (2-8) won't be facing a ranked opponent. Instead, they'll welcome in the Billikens (0-13) who are searching for their first victory of 2015 and the Wildcats (6-5) who lost their last match at Lock Haven on Sunday by a score of 2-1, but had won three straight prior to that. Saint Louis and Davidson will play each other at 4 p.m. today before this weekend's slate begins.

The Billikens' nine goals have come from seven different scorers with Morgan Crowe and Erica Bondoc leading the charge at two apiece. Five different players have tallied an assist while Crowe holds the team lead in points (5) and Carly Kissinger has a stranglehold on the squad's shot lead (26).

In goal, despite giving up 64 goals this season, Tori Westhead has racked up 123 saves with a .658 save percentage and her 9.46 saves per match are good for first in the Atlantic 10 and fourth in the country. Also, much like App State's Marissa O'Brien who is fourth in the nation in defensive saves with five, Saint Louis' Monica Ryan has accumulated three of her own, which is tied for ninth among the Division I ranks.

The Wildcats have had quite a bit more to cheer about as they have won four of six since beginning the year at 2-3. They have outscored their opponents 20-15 this season thanks in large part to Melissa Funsten, who is doing big things at both ends of the field. The senior midfielder is first on the team in goals (5), shots (32) and shots on goal (18), but also first on the squad and tied for ninth in the country in defensive saves with three.

Aside from Funsten, Anna Davis is Davidson's leader in points (12) thanks to four scores and four helpers while Lucy Pidcock has registered two of the team's six game-winning goals. Emily Leytham has started all 11 games in the cage with 14 goals allowed and  49 saves for a .778 save percentage (10th in the nation). Her 1.34 goals against average is also good for 12th in DI.

Prior to Sunday's match, Appalachian State will recognize its six seniors in Robbi Jensen, Charlotte Kirwan, Anna Copsey, Hanna French, Caroline Phillips, and Cristina Ceppi. Live stats for both games will be available at appstatesports.com.
