ATLANTA, Ga. – In its second match in as many nights in the state of Georgia, Appalachian State University volleyball kept it rolling with a 3-1 win at Georgia State on Saturday evening.

In what seems like a broken record, the Mountaineers (17-4, 10-0 Sun Belt) extended their winning streak to 13 games and also improved their perfect conference record to 10-0. For the second consecutive match, Jess Keller led both teams with 25 kills and finished with a .314 hitting percentage.  Her 25 kills matched her career-high from a five-set win against Liberty on Sept. 12.

Paige Brown narrowly missed a season-high assist total with 57 against the Panthers. The assist tally is her second-highest total this season - Brown's season-high was 59 in a five-set loss to Virginia on Sept. 5.

“We let the second set get away from us due to lack of execution, but we were able to get back on track to finish 2-0 on the road trip,” said head coach Matt Ginipro. “We are working on improving our play every time we are on the court so we are ready for the Sun Belt championships. At this point in the season, that will be more about our competitive mentality than anything else. This group wanted to achieve something special this season and they have put themselves in a great position to do just that.”

Appalachian State got off a quick start in the opening set and jumped out to a 15-8 lead and spanned two Georgia State timeouts. During that opening stretch, five different Mountaineers recorded kills including four from Keller and two from Brown, who normally sets up her teammates for the scoring opportunity.

The rest of the set was dead even, 10-10, with the Mountaineers taking the opening set with a 25-18 set win.

The second set proved to be the most competitive set of the night. App State built a seven-point advantage and seemed ready to close the door on the Panthers, but Georgia State found a 13-6 run to come back and knot the set at 23-23. Both teams would see-saw points and knot scores at 24-24, 25-25 and 26-26. An attack error and a kill from the Panthers sealed the set for Georgia State to tie the match 1-1.

The Black and Gold appeared to be on a mission out of the break and raced out to an early eight-point lead at 14-6. The run would be higlighted by four kills in a row, including three in a row from Emily Corrigan and back-to-back kills from Ashton Gregory and Keller to build their advantage.

Six attack errors seemingly closed the door on the third set for the Panthers and kills from Corrigan and Gregory helped put away Georgia State 25-13 in a great bounce back set for the Apps.

With a 2-1 match lead, the Mountaineers got off to nearly the same start they did in the previous set and had a 14-8 advantage that spanned two Panther timeouts. Five kills from Keller and two from Gregory helped aid the App State run, while Cassidy Stephenson contributed two kills as well.

App State continued to find points both offensively and off of Georgia State errors. With the Panthers on a 7-5 run to cut the deficit to 22-17, App State called timeout. Out of the timeout, back-to-back-to-back kills from Gregory, Keller and Brown finished off the set for the Mountaineers 25-17 and the Panthers in the match 3-1.

The win over Georgia State marked the second win for the Mountaineers over the Panthers in one week. The Apps topped the Panthers 3-1 in Boone on Oct. 17.

Corrigan finished second amongst all student-athletes with 16 kills in the match, while Gregory tallied 14 and hit an impressive .464 in the victory. Stephenson added seven kills in the contest.

Brown tallied her 12th double-double of the season and totaled 20 digs to go along with her match-high 57 assists. Olivia Reed, Corrigan, Meghan Mahoney and Kati Stammen all finished with double-digit digs with 14, 12, 11 and 11, respectively.

As a team, the Black and Gold hit .309 and recorded 68 kills, 65 assists and 67 digs in the victorious effort.

The Mountaineers will return to action on Friday, Oct. 30 against UL Lafayette from the Holmes Center at 6:30 p.m. They will also play South Alabama that same weekend on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 12:30 p.m.
