FH Shut Out by Richmond in Final Home Game

BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University field hockey was held to just four shots and one corner as Richmond shut out the Mountaineers by a score of 3-0 on Sunday afternoon.

"Richmond was a tough opponent," said head coach Meghan Dawson. "They are skilled, fast, challenged our front line to keep us out of the circle offensively, and really challenged our defense."

App State fell to 4-10 on the season while the Spiders improved to 8-7, winning three of their last four and snapping a two-game road skid. Appalachian State was shut out at home for just the second time in seven matches and third time all season (14 matches).

Dawson continued, "We have learned from every game and today is no exception. This team continues to grow and that is what I am proud of. We are holding ourselves to a higher standard playing-wise, which is keeping these games closer than before."

The visitors held the advantage in total shots (18-4), shots on goal (9-2) and corners (8-1), while Cristina Ceppi outsaved Richmond's Amanda Hoyt, 6-1.

The Spiders wasted no time taking the lead and did so with a goal just 29 seconds into the contest. That would do it for first half scoring before Richmond scored in both the 42nd and 63rd minutes of the second period to take a commanding 3-0 advantage.

For the home team's offensive attack, Taylor Cimbalist registered two shots while Jordan Van Cleave and Caroline Phillips each had one apiece.

Next up, Appalachian State is at Lock Haven on Friday, Oct. 23, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
