FARMVILLE, Va. - Appalachian State University field hockey surrendered one goal in the first half and three more in the second before it finally got on the board late in the game, only to lose 4-1 on the road to Longwood.
"Longwood played really well today," said head coach Meghan Dawson. "They are a skilled team that executes. We learned a lot from our experience today and look to continue to grow and move forward."
The Mountaineers fell to 4-9 overall including 0-5 in true road games while the Lancers improved to 5-8 and snapped a three-game skid. The home team held the advantage in shots (24-14), but the two teams attempted just as many corners (11), and Cristina Ceppi recorded more saves than Longwood's Katie Wyman (12-5). Those 12 stops were one shy of tying Ceppi's season high set on Aug. 28 at Louisville and has reached 12 saves in a game twice this year.
The hosts took no time getting on the board converting on their first shot attempt just 1:12 into the contest. However, App State toughened up as Ceppi didn't give up a goal for the rest of the period. The senior stalwart had nine saves in the first half, her most in the first 35 minutes of play since Sept. 20, 2014 at Miami (Ohio) when she had 10.
Out of the intermission, the Lancers put shots in the back of the cage in the 39th, 44th and 50th minutes to take a 4-0 advantage. In the 67th minute, though, Appalachian cut the deficit to three on Taylor Cimbalist's fourth goal of the season and Caroline Phillips' third assist. C. Phillips beat her defender and dished it to Cimbalist who spun and shot it lower right.
C. Phillips led the offensive attack once again with seven shots while Rebecca McLean attempted three and both Cimbalist and Jordan Van Cleave each had two attempts apiece.
Appalachian State will host Richmond on Sunday at 12 p.m. in its final home match of the season.
