BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University men's track and field hosted the Mountaineer Open this weekend and earned eight top-two performances in the process.
The Mountaineers claimed first-place finishes in the weight throw, triple jump and pole vault. Nathan Milch won the weight throw with a toss personal-best throw of 54-9.50 feet. John Leonard finished right behind Milch with a throw of 53-6.25 for second-place. Mason Lasater took fourth with a throw of 50-0.50.
Both Milch and Leonard both took second and fourth, respectively, in the shot put for the Apps. Milch earned a personal-best throw of 53-6.25 feet.
The Apps saw lots of success in the pole vault with Phillip Thomas claiming a win for the second-straight week. Thomas led the vaulters by clearing 15-2.25 feet. In a tie for second was Matt Layne and Patrick Quinn with both clearing 14-8.25. Alex Lomax took fifth with the same height.
As the only Appalachian State participant in the triple jump, Henry Bustle took first with a jump of 47-3.00 feet. In the high jump, Cole Finch finished in fourth with a season-best height of 6-2.75 feet.
Joshua Hanna finished in second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.03, while Ariel Shores took eighth in the 800 meter run in a personal-best time of 2:04.44. Evan Wright took 10th in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.37.
The Mountaineers will return to action next weekend when they travel to the Penn State Invitational in State College, Pa.
