SAN MARCOS, Texas - Appalachian State University women's basketball fell to Texas State on Saturday afternoon at Strahan Coliseum, 67-58.

The Mountaineers (9-9, 4-5 Sun Belt) trailed by just three points with one minute to play in the game, but committed fouls, helping the Bobcats (12-7, 7-3) to a victory.

Each team started the game strong, tying the score five times in the first five minutes. With 14:24 left in the first half Maryah Sydnor hit a jumper to give Appalachian a 12-10 lead. From there the Apps would go on a 9-0 run, featuring a three-pointer from Katie Mallow.

The Bobcats would respond with an 11-2 run, tying the game, 21-21 with 5:37 left in the first half. Texas State took the lead at the 3:53 minute mark, scoring ten-straight points to lead, 31-24.

Mia Marshall would close out the first half for the Apps by scoring four-straight points, helping them to a 34-32 lead at halftime.

Sydnor led the Mountaineers in the first half with ten points, while the team shot 46.2 percent from the floor.

The Bobcats were led by Kileah Mays' 12 points as the team recorded a 43.3 field goal percentage.

Texas State came out in the second half to tie the game, but Mallow would respond with a jumper to give App two points. At the 16:21 minute mark the score was tied, 38-38. From there the Mountaineers struggled to find baskets as Texas State recorded four-straight points. Appalachian would not get a point until Joi Jones hit a three-pointer three and a half minutes later. 

The Bobcats followed that up with a three of their own, but Ashley Bassett-Smith would hit a jumper as the Apps trailed, 45-43 with 12 minutes to play.

Texas State went on a 7-2 run, but the Mountaineers would get right back into the game off six-straight points from Jones. Bria Carter scored to put the Mountaineers down by just two points with a score of 55-53 with 7:22 to play.

Another scoring drought would come for the Mountaineers as the Apps did not find a basket for five minutes. The Bobcats would only score four points in the five-minute span, helping the Mountaineers when they went on a 5-0 run to trail, 61-58 with a 1:17 on the clock.

Down by just one possession, the Apps committed a foul, sending the Bobcats to the free throw line. The Mountaineers would be forced to foul in the last minute of the game as they fell to Texas State, 67-58.

Jones led the Apps with 13 points, while Sydnor and Bassett-Smith each chipped in ten. The Mountaineers shot 35.5 percent from the floor in the game, grabbing 44 rebounds and turning the ball over 21 times.

Texas State was led by Taeier Deer's 23 points as the team recorded a 41.1 field goal percentage. The Bobcats tallied 38 rebounds and 15 turnovers.

The Mountaineers will return to action when they travel to Georgia Southern on Jan. 29.
