WILMINGTON, N.C. – Appalachian State University men's tennis was held without a point in a 7-0, season-opening loss at No. 50 UNCW on Saturday at the UNCW Tennis Complex.
The Mountaineers (0-1) put up solid fights in three of six singles matches, but could not overcome a strong lineup for the Seahawks (1-0), who did not drop a set on the day.
Highlighting Appalachian's efforts were Oliver Casey and newcomers Trey Morris and Scott Webster. Casey dropped a hard-fought battle at the No. 1 spot 7-6, 7-6 while Webster suffered a 6-4, 6-4 loss at No. 4 and Morris lost 7-5, 6-4 at No. 6.
The Apps were also shutout in doubles play, though the tandem of Morris/Webster put up a solid showing at the No. 3 spot, falling by a 6-3 final.
Appalachian State returns to action on Jan. 25 when they play host to Lees-McRae (9 a.m.) and North Carolina A&T (2 p.m.) at Deer Valley Racquet Club.
