Caudle's Goal Lifts Mountaineers Past Red Wolves

JONESBORO, Ark. – Jenna Caudle scored her first goal of the season in the 36th minute and Appalachian State University women's soccer capped off a perfect weekend with a 1-0 win over Arkansas State on Sunday.

The Mountaineers (5-6-0, 2-0-0 Sun Belt) remained in a tie atop the league standings with the win over the Red Wolves (3-8-0, 0-2-0).

Appalachian turned on the pressure early and often, notching three shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of play, but A-State goalkeeper Amanda Lee kept the Mountaineers off the board until Caudle connected on a header at the 35:22 mark to give the Apps the edge.

Nicole Steyl and Sarah Moon were credited with assists on the play, It was the fourth assist of the year for Steyl and the first of Moon's career.

"It was great to see so many faces step up this weekend," said head coach Sarah Strickland. "With two shutouts and eight different players notching a goal or an assist, it's an all-around great weekend. It was truly a weekend where everyone worked together to take one more step in acheiving our goals."

Arkansas State nearly tied the match up just 28 seconds later, but Megan Roberson made one of her three saves on the day to keep the Mountaineers in front.

The Apps had chances to extend the lead in the second half, but Lee made two stops over the final 45 minutes of action to keep the match close. Despite her effort on the defensive end, it would not be enough as Roberson would make one more save in the second half to seal the deal for the Mountaineers.

Appalachian finished with a 14-10 edge in shots, including an 8-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Mountaineers also finished with a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Apps return to action on Sunday when they travel to Texas State for a 1 p.m. kickoff before heading home for four-straight.
