Late Rally Not Enough in 8-4 Loss to W&M
BOONE, N.C. — Two late goals was not enough for Appalachian State University field hockey (2-8, 0-1 NorPac) dropping an 8-4 match to William and Mary on Friday at the Brandon and Erica M Adcock Field at Appalachian Field Hockey Stadium.

The last six minutes of the match was all Appalachian. Time ran short for the Mountaineers as senior Dana Wetmore scored the last two goals in regulation to close the match at 8-4.

Appalachian scored first and early in the match. Freshman Amber Prince scored her second goal on the season after the Mountaineers was awarded a corner. Junior Hanna French  took the corner that was passed to Wetmore. Wetmore took the initial shot but was saved by the goalie and Prince was there to score off the rebound and give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.

William and Mary (2-8, 0-0 CAA) scored the next three goals, two that were deflected off the goalie and one that was almost saved by an Appalachian defender but bounced off the stick and went through the net. The Tribe led 3-1.

After a timely steal by sophomore Marissa O'Brien that was passed to a sprinting Prince, senior Jordyn Warren received the pass on a fast break, showcased her speed and beat the defender down the right side to pull within one and  make the score 3-2 going into halftime.

The Tribe scored right before the half after a second shot attempt. Brittany Hopkins whiffed the first shot, but collected herself and found the net, After the half, William and Mary found chance after chance to score, reeling off three scores to give them an 8-2 lead but the Mountaineers did not back down applying pressure and scoring the final two goals of the match.

Appalachian recorded eight shots in the game in which five were on goal. Three of the four goals were assisted on. Cristina Ceppi recorded the loss in the net moving her to 2-8 on the year but she added to her save total of the year with two in the game. Senior Laura Malinoski recorded a defensive save helping Ceppi in the back line for her first defensive save of the season.

Wetmore led the charge for the Mountaineers scoring two goals and added an assist. Prince added one goal and an assist while French had two assists.

The Mountaineers will return to action on Sunday at noon as they take on the visiting Hawks of Saint Joseph's at Adcock Field.
