DAVIDSON, N.C. — An overtime goal by freshman Taylor Cimbalist helped Appalachian State University field hockey (2-4, 0-1 NorPac) secure a 3-2 win over longtime rivals Davidson on Sunday at Belk Turf Field.

Davidson (1-4, 0-0 A-10) started the match strong scoring the first two goals of the match. Late in the first half, with nearly 20 seconds remaining, freshman Micaela Diedericks found Jessi Stuart to grab momentum going into the second half and make the score 2-1. Stuart scored her second goal of the match off a deflection from a penalty corner tying the match at 2-2. Senior Dana Wetmore took the initial shot off the corner so she was credited with the assist.

Both teams would not score a goal the rest of the second half. In overtime, Cimbalist showed her clutchability, scoring the match-winning goal off a Laura Malinoski assist.

Cristina Ceppi earned the win moving to 2-4 on the season. She had seven saves including a match saver late in the second half to force overtime. Appalachian had 12 total shots in the match with an impressive 10 of them on goal.

The Mountaineers will play a pair of matches in Ohio, facing Miami University in Oxford on Sept. 20 and Ohio State in Columbus on Sept. 21, before returning to North Carolina to face nationally ranked Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Sept. 23.
