BOONE, N.C. – With four goals on Friday afternoon, Appalachian State University women's soccer commanded Belmont in a 4-1 victory.
"Today was a great accomplishment for our program," said head coach Sarah Strickland. "Belmont is a very respected, well organized team and we truly had to put two great halves together to get the result. I was very proud of our team and the efforts of so many tonight. Drawdy's game-winning goal was definitely a huge moment for all of us."
The Mountaineers (3-3-0) got off to a lightning fast start in the fourth minute of the game. Sam Childress put away her fourth goal of the season off of a Julia Holz header assist to put the Apps up 1-0 early.
Just a little over 10 minutes later in the 14th minute Leah Drawdy netted her second of the season on a penalty kick. The goal from Drawdy proved to be the game-winner.
The third goal of the first half was also the second of the season for freshman Erin Settle in the 29th minute. Jenna Caudle made a great pass in the box to Settle who was able to put it away and give the Apps a 3-1 lead.
With a 3-0 going into the second half in the 60th minute, the Mountaineers would extend it to a 4-0 lead when Jane Cline was able to make a great play on a beautiful through ball from Kebrina Keys.
The Bruins tallied one in the contest in the 81st minute when Belicia Mediola took control of a ball in the box and put it away.
Megan Roberson played the first half and made two saves, while allowing no goals and earning the victory. Sam Steyl relieved Roberson and allowed one goal, but made two saves between the pipes.
App State led Belmont in shots, 14-9 and shots on goal six to five. The Mountaineers were able to create four corner kick opportunities to the Bruins' two.
