Volleyball Ends Season With Loss to UT Arlington

SAN MARCOS, Texas - Appalachian State University volleyball fell in the first-round of the Sun Belt Championships on Thursday afternoon to UT Arlington in four sets with scores of 25-16, 20-25, 22-25 and 21-25.

The Mountaineers (21-10, 11-9 Sun Belt) finished off the 2014 season with with a fifth-place standing in the Sun Belt Conference, falling to fourth-seeded UT Arlington (25-8, 14-6) in San Marcos, Texas.

Appalachian started off the first set slowly, trailing the Mavericks 7-3, but then went on a 5-0 run to take an 8-7 lead. The Mavs scored four points but the Apps continued to dominate, finding kills from Jacqui Spurgeon, Emily Corrigan and Hailey Kerr to lead 16-11.

The Mountaineers closed out the first set with five-straight points to take it, 25-16.

The Mountaineers started strong in the second set, taking a 5-1 lead. They continued to score, maintaining the lead so that UT Arlington trailed 12-8, but then the Mavericks took control. UT Arlington scored eight-straight points to take a 16-12 lead over the Mountaineers. 

The Apps attempted to catch up, but the Mavs took the second set 25-20 to tie the match 1-1.

The third set started closely with the Mavs taking a 7-5 lead. The Mountaineers stayed with them until UT Arlington went on a 5-1 run for a 12-6 lead.

The Mavericks would find three kills to make the score 18-12, but then Appalachian came to life, going on a 5-1 run with kills from Jess Keller and Corrigan to trail by just two with a score of 19-17.

Lauren Gray and Keller recorded kills for the Mountaineers to make the score 23-22 with a UT Arlington lead, but the Mavs got the last two points of the set to take it, 25-22 and lead the match, 2-1.

The fourth set began with domination from Appalachian as they jumped out to an 11-3 lead. UT Arlington found points but Appalachian maintained their lead for a score of 17-8. The Mavericks suddenly gained momentum, scoring 10 of the next 11 points  to trail by just one point.

The Mountaineers hit a wall as UT Arlington passed them, scoring eight of the last ten points of the set and winning the fourth, 25-21 to take the match 3-1.

Keller led the Mountaineers with 19 points, while Corrigan followed with 17. Paige Brown notched 45 assists and 15 digs.

Kati Stammen led the team on defense with 19 digs, followed by Meghan Mahoney's 16 and Olivia Reed's 11.

The Mavericks were led by Stacey Koch's 12 kills, while Caitlyn Cooney and Qiana Canete each tallied 21 digs in the win.

The Mountaineers hit .136 on the match as UT Arlington recorded a .164 hitting percentage.

With the loss, Appalachian ends the 2014 season with a 21-10 overall record.
