Appalachian State (2-2) raced out to a 13-2 lead and never trailed en route to the home-opening triumph. After taking the early 11-point lead, the Mountaineers never led by less than five points and expanded the advantage to as many as 15 during the second half of the comfortable victory.
The Mountaineers set the tone early, scoring the first nine points of the ball game to put the Pirates (1-4) into an early hole that they were unable to dig out of.
