Mountaineers Win Thriller on Senior Day
Mountaineers Win Thriller on Senior Day

BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University field hockey won its second game in a row on Saturday, defeating conference opponent Pacific 5-4. The Mountaineers were celebrating senior day at Brandon & Erica M Adcock Field. Appalachian saw all three seniors in Jessi Stuart, Laura Malinoski, and Dana Wetmore get on the scoresheet to lead their teammates to victory.

Wetmore started the scoring off for the Apps with an early unassisted goal. Pacific's Ali Campos struck back to level the score at the 13th minute mark. Micaela Diedericks pushed Appalachian back in front when her shot in the 21st minute hit the back of the net.

Pacific ended the half with two straight goals from Campos and Axelle Steffen to take a 3-2 advantage going into the break.

Campos added another goal for the Tigers in the 49th minute to extend the lead. The Mountaineers didn't give up down two goals and played lockdown defense the rest of the match. Malinoski recorded her second defensive save of the season to deny Pacific a fifth goal.

Appalachian put the pressure on in the second half and were rewarded with three late goals. First Savanna Sheridan scored her third goal of the season off a rebound. Six minutes later, Stuart netted the equalizing goal, which was her fourth goal of the season.

The Black and Gold were then awarded a penalty stroke with less than two minutes in the match. It was fitting that on senior day Malinoski was able to slot the penalty stoke into the bottom left corner to seal the win for Appalachian.

Cristina Ceppi earned her fourth victory in goal this season. Ceppi saved seven shots in the win.

The Mountaineers are in action again on Sunday at home to try for their third-straight victory.
