Apps Grab Four Wins at ITA Regionals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Oliver Casey scored an upset win over North Carolina's Chad Hoskins as Appalachian State University men's tennis picked up four wins at the ITA Carolinas Regional Tournament over the weekend.

Casey, who defeated Hoskins 7-6 (1), 4-1 (ret.), was one of three Mountaineers to advance to the round of 32 in singles play. Jack Maddocks scored a win over Coastal Carolina's Jabar Al Mutawa (7-6 [2], 6-3) and Zach Bost earned a victory over Benjamin Kaszas of Gardner Webb (6-4, 7-5).

All three players fell in the round of 32 as Bost lost to NC State's Austin Powell (6-2, 6-2), Casey dropped a match to Kyle Kock of South Carolina (6-4, 6-1) and Maddocks was topped by Clemson's Alejandro Augusto (6-2, 6-2).

In doubles action, the team of Bost/Casey upset 10th-seeded Simon Norenius/Austin Powell of NC State by a scored of 8-5 before falling to Cale Hammond/Jason Tahir of Duke (8-6). The Mountaineer duo of Jan-Willem Kleynhans/Maddocks lost their opener by a score of 8-4 to UNC's pair of Jack Murray/Ronnie Schneider.

Appalachian is off this coming weekend, but wraps up fall play at the Winthrop Invite from Oct. 31-Nov. 2.
