Women's Soccer: Final Practice Report

BOONE, N.C. – The Appalachian State University women's soccer team conducted its Black and Gold scrimmage on Sunday, August 11th.

The Mountaineers played three 30-minute periods during the scrimmage, it took some time for the teams to get into the flow, but it didn't take long. Megan Roberson and Jordan Hatton were the keepers for both teams.

The black team's back line of Nicole Steyl, Carrie Taylor, Amy Werdine, and Logan White proved to be a solid test early for the gold attack as the lineup controlled play through most of the first 30 minutes and produced a nice goal from Jane Cline that beat Hatton going to her left.

The second period showed a bit more flow with both teams settling in as Samantha Childress hit a free kick just outside the box for the black team that drew a save from Roberson. Meanwhile, the gold team stepped up offensively and produced three corner kick opportunities, one of which came off a nicely played ball upfield from Kebrina Keys to Aubrey Fletcher on the run. Later in the period, a nice give-and-go from Childress to Kathryn Palmer then back to Childress beat Roberson going to her left, giving the black team a 2-0 lead.

The final 30 minutes didn't see any goals, but the black team controlled most of the play. Both teams were able to generate some solid scoring chances, but eventually the black team came out ahead 2-0.

"I think this game is a great opportunity for us to get out there and see the starting 11 that we think we have through the first few days of preseason and get people opportunities," said Werdine. "I think the first 30 minutes we struggled a little bit but as the game went on we played a lot better and that will help our confidence going into Thursday."

"This team is very flexible as far as where people are playing and what the expectation is," said head coach Sarah Strickland. "We try to look at the chemistry of the players. Who plays well together and who plays off of each other well, just trying to create the right mix."

The women's soccer team opens up exhibition play on Thursday, August 15th when it travels to Blacksburg, Va. to face the Hokies of Virginia Tech. Game time is se to start at 4 p.m.
