GREENVILLE, S.C. - Appalachian State University volleyball dominated the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament on Friday morning against UNCG, winning in three sets with scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-11.
The first set would consist of four tied scores early on before the Mountaineers would hit their stride. After a kill by Lindsey Sauls to find the lead 5-4, the Apps would gain a comfortable lead with a score of 17-12. From there the Mountaineers continued to score, winning the set 25-19.
The Apps started the second set in dominant fashion, scoring five straight points to take an early 7-3 lead. After a timeout from UNCG with Appalachian leading 20-16, the Spartans would score three straight points to come within two. Emily Corrigan would record a kill to put the Mountaineers up 24-21, but UNCG would fire back, scoring two straight to make the score 24-23. Appalachian remained calm, taking the next point with a kill from Corrigan and winning the set 25-23 to lead the match 2-0.
The Mountaineers scored the first four points of the third set to quickly lead the Spartans 4-0. The Apps would not be stopped, continuing to dominate UNCG and making the score 21-8. App State easily took the third set 25-11 and eliminated the Spartans, 3-0.
Corrigan led the match offensively and was named Player of the Match, tallying 20 kills on the morning. Sauls followed with 11 kills and no errors for a .407 hitting percentage.
The Mountaineers had a team effort on the defensive side with Meghan Mahoney recording 11 digs, Paige Brown notching 10 and Corrigan with seven.
Brown had a stellar performace for the Apps, assisting a match-high 36 kills in the win.
The Mountaineers had five blocks to UNCG's three, while hitting an impressive .358 and holding the Spartans to just a .164 hitting percentage.
With the win, Appalachian will move on to the semifinal round to play either No. 8 seed Elon or No. 1 seed Georgia Southern tomorrow at 5 p.m.
