ELON, N.C. - Appalachian State University women's soccer got two goals from freshman forward Samantha Childress, including the golden goal in overtime to give the Mountaineers the 2-1 victory over Elon in Southern Conference play Sunday afternoon at Ruud Field.

With the thrilling victory, the Apps earn their first conference victory of the season and move to 4-5 on the season and 1-1 in the SoCon. The Phoenix drop to 2-6-3 overall and 0-1-1 in league play.

The Mountaineers were on the attack all match, outshooting Elon 17-6 for the match. Childress led the way with four shots on goal.

The match did not get off to a good start as Elon notched the opening goal in the eighth minute. Elon's Raychel Diver fired a shot off the crossbar and into the net past Appalachian goalkeeper Jordan Hatton. The goal was the second of the season for Diver.

The Apps responded in the 29^th minute when freshman Merlin Beckwith found her fellow freshman Childress, and the Kernersville, N.C. native scored her second of the season, knotting the score at 1-1.

After a scoreless second half, Elon forced Appalachian into its second straight overtime match. At the end of regulation, the Mountaineers fired 16 shots and forced Elon goalkeeper Kate Murphy to make seven saves.

It only took just over six minutes in the first overtime period for Childress to clinch the match. Senior Meggie Graham led Childress on a breakaway and her shot beat Murphy from fifteen yards out, giving App State the 2-1 victory.

With the victory, Hatton earned her first victory of the season, tallying three saves. Childress earned her second and third goals on the season, tying for the team's lead with sophomores Julia Holz and Jenna Caudle.

The Mountaineers spilt the weekend and will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 28 against Georgia Southern at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
