Men's Soccer Upsets Chanticleers in 1-0 Shutout
Sept. 16, 2011
CONWAY, S.C. - ASU junior Harrison Delbridge delivered a
goal in the 82nd minute to lift Appalachian State men's soccer (3-2-1) to a 1-0
upset over Coastal Carolina (4-2-0) at the Coastal Carolina/adidas Tournament
on Friday.
Though not ranked nationally, Coastal Carolina defeated No.
16 VCU last weekend and had received votes in the latest NSCAA poll. Friday's loss snapped a four-game winning streak for the Chanticleers.
In the first half, the teams each tallied three shots,
though the Mountaineers put two of their three on goal. Coastal Carolina's aggressive
play warranted eight fouls while ASU was only whistled three times.
After a scoreless first half, play continued deep into the
second stanza with the threat of extra time looming. The Chanticleers out-shot
the Black and Gold by a 7-2 margin but only managed a pair on goal.
With less than 10 minutes remaining, Appalachian's throw-in
specialist Mark Bridges injected a throw from the left, and Delbridge's header found the right side of the net for his first goal of the season.
Coastal's final shot came in the closing seconds, but the
effort was wide, and Appalachian cruised to its second-consecutive win.
ASU sophomore keeper Danny Free saved both shots he faced
and preserved his third-straight shutout. David Dodge finished with a team-high three shots for the Mountaineers.
With the win, Appalachian's all-time series record against
Coastal Carolina evens at 1-1-1, following two previous contests in the 1980's.
The Mountaineers now look forward to close out the
tournament with a matchup against Hartwick on Sunday, Sept. 18 at noon.
