BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State University men's basketball signed Rantavious Gilbert to a National Letter of Intent, head coach Jason Capel announced on Friday. The 6-8, 230-pound forward is the third member of the Mountaineers' signing class for the 2012-13 season.
Gilbert comes to the High Country from Albany, Ga., where he played for coach Marquis Davis at Monroe High School. The Tornadoes posted an 18-9 mark this past season, including a 9-1 conference mark. Gilbert notched 10.0 points along with nearly 10 rebounds and five blocks per game on the season. He shot a team-high 62.3 percent from the field as well.
Gilbert also played for the AAU Georgia Blazers team and boasts a 3.5 grade point average. He is the son of Betty Gilbert and has one older sibling, Dominique (21).
The forward adds more size to a large incoming class that includes 6-8 Michael Obacha (Summerfield, N.C./High Point Christian).
After redshirting last season, Jay Canty (Jamestown, N.C./Xavier) also joins the fold for his sophomore campaign as the Apps look to replace a strong senior class that included three front court players in Isaac Butts, Petey Hausley and Andre Williamson as well as wing Omar Carter.
