Gold Cruises to Victory in Black & Gold Scrimmage

BOONE, N.C. – Appalachian State University women's basketball gave its fans their first glimpse of the 2012-13 season when it hosted its Black & Gold Scrimmage on Tuesday at the Holmes Center.

The Mountaineers' Gold squad won by a final of 93-68 thanks to a game-high 38 points and 11 rebounds from Maryah Sydnor. Although the Black team led by one point (41-40) at halftime, the Gold team exploded for 53 second-half points and cruised to an easy win.

Both teams saw four players score in double figures. Kelsey Sharkey poured in 19 points for the Gold while Courtney Freeman led the Black squad with 21 points while Anna Freeman notched 17 points.

Appalachian State will hit the floor again on Saturday when it hosts Mars Hill College at 2 p.m. in its lone exhibition contest of the preseason.

The exhibition contest will also serve as a fundraiser for Roblealto, a non-profit social service organization in Costa Rica.

Roblealto, which provides food, education and other services to poverty-stricken families in San Jose, Costa Rica, was one of several places that the team has visited in its ongoing community service efforts, making a trip to the country last summer.

Donations will be taken at the donation table in the main concourse of the Holmes Center. Checks can be made payable to App State Women's Basketball - Roblealto. Last season, the Apps raised almost $1,200 for Roblealto and are looking to raise better than $1,500 this season.

Those who are not able to attend but still wish to donate can send a check to:
