Women's Soccer Edged by The Citadel, 3-2

CHARLESTON, S.C. - ASU's Julia Holz scored the first goal in the first minute, but the Mountaineers were unable to hold on to the lead, as Appalachian women's soccer dropped a 3-2 game to The Citadel in Southern Conference action on Sunday at Washington Light Infantry Field. The Apps stand at 4-6-0 (0-2-0 SoCon) while the Bulldogs are 3-6-1 (1-1-0 SoCon).

On the game's first possession, the Mountaineers were able to take advantage of a lackadaisical and worked the ball downfield in the opening seconds. Meggie Graham injected the ball towards net and Sydney Hill redirected it to Graham, who slipped the ball in net just 47 seconds into the match; it was her team-leading fourth goal of the season.

The Citadel regrouped and wore down the ASU defense with an onslaught of five unanswered shots. In the 32nd minute, Nicole Levermann made her own opportunity, dribbled down the field and slipped the ball in to level the score at 1-1.

The Bulldogs tacked on another score in the period's waning minutes as a crossing pass was deflected by ASU keeper Amy Kolowsky and was gathered by Angela Foyt, who found the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.

After the break, The Citadel's Mariana Garcia utilized some fancy footwork to outmaneuver the Mountaineers' defense and tally a third goal for the Bulldogs in the 53rd minute.

In the 71st minute, heavy pressure by Appalachian drew a foul from the Bulldogs inside the penalty area. Hannah Coad was selected to take the kick and was successful for her first goal of the season. The score closed the gap to 3-2, but the Mountaineers were unable to equalize the score and were handed their second-straight conference loss.

Kolowsky finished the game with three saves, while five Mountaineers were each able to record a pair of shots.

The Mountaineers return home and continue conference play on Friday, September 30. The Apps host rival Furman for a 6 p.m. game at ASU Soccer Stadium at Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
